Would you like to develop your portrait making skills? Do you have a fascination with photographing people? 

In this program, you will explore the history of portrait photography and delve into the psychological, emotional and technical aspects of the portrait.

Through a combination of research and practical assignments, you will develop your portrait-making skills. You will learn how to develop a rapport and relationship with your sitter that will produce intimate and unique portraits.

In each session, you will receive personalised feedback from your tutor on your images produced for each assignment.

The course will be facilitated by award-winning photographer, Fiona Wolf along with guest speakers, Bill Green, David Charles Collins and Paul McDonald.

This in-depth course will cover the following topics:

  • Art History and Symbolism
  • The ethics of photographing people
  • Classic/traditional portrait
  • Environmental portrait
  • Conceptual portrait
  • The Nude
  • The Self Portrait
  • Domestic photography and documenting family life
  • How to create a portrait series
  • How to organise and prepare for a portrait shoot
  • Collaborating with your sitter
  • Posing and how to direct
  • Exploring camera options for different styles
  • Lighting on location
  • Post-production for portrait photography

This is an intermediate course suitable for those who understand how to shoot manually and would like to develop a photographic portrait practice or refine their skills.

Equipment Requirements:
DSLR, mirrorless camera or a digital | analogue camera with full manual capabilities.
Speedlight. (Not essential)

During the last session, you will discuss the work produced over the course and celebrate with a glass of wine with your tutor and fellow students.

Program Commences:
20th February 2pm - 5pm
& then twice a month for 5 consecutive months (March - July 2021). 

March dates are:
6th March - 2pm-5pm 
20th March - 2pm-4pm

In the first session your tutor will discuss April - July dates with the group.
